Description:
The Great Migration and the Making of Black Las Vegas
A lecture series that examines the history of our city and the people, places, and things that make Vegas our home.
Between 1910-1970 roughly 6 million African Americans left their homes throughout the South to rebuild their lives in states throughout the North and the West. Escaping segregation and an exploitative labor regime, Black people often sought work in urban centers outside the boundaries of the Jim Crow South. This presentation by Tyler Parry, Associate Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies at UNLV, adds to the broader story of the Great Migration by focusing upon Las Vegas, highlighting how southern Nevada’s unique economic circumstances attracted Black people seeking better opportunities, alongside the ways in which the African American community continued the fight for Civil Rights in the desert city.
Free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and may be limited. For more information call, please call 702.507.3459.

The Atomic Museum invites guests to the next Atomix event with Academy Award-nominated, Emmy award-winning director Jon Else.
Evening to Include Cocktails, Conversation About Else’s Film “The Day After Trinity: J. Robert Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb”
On Thursday, March 7, the Atomic Museum invites guests to its next ATOMIX event with Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jon Else titled “The Definitive Oppenheimer.” The evening will include cocktails, hour d’oeuvres, conversation, and film excerpts from Else’s documentary “The Day After Trinity: J. Robert Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb.”
Widely considered to be the quintessential Oppenheimer documentary, the film blends interviews with Oppenheimer’s family, friends, and colleagues with historical footage of the Manhattan Project and its aftermath for a powerful and personal look into the life of the “father of the atomic bomb.” The ATOMIX discussion will dive into Else’s personal stories and challenges from the filmmaking process as well as the resurgence of interest in “The Day After Trinity” due to last year’s release of Christopher Nolan’s “OPPENHEIMER.”
The conversation will also highlight Else’s critically acclaimed film “Wonders Are Many: The Making of Doctor Atomic,” which follows the creation and performance of the 2005 opera titled “Doctor Atomic.” In the opera, Oppenheimer is the central character set amid the 48-hour period before the first atomic denotation.
Throughout his career, Else also worked on other atomic-related and Oppenheimer-adjacent projects as well as hundreds of documentaries appearing on PBS, BBC, ABC, MTV, ARTE, HBO and Netflix. He has won four Emmys for writing, producing, directing and cinematography. Else has also received several duPont-Columbia Awards, Peabody Awards, several Academy Award nominations, the Prix Italia Award, Sundance Special Jury Prize and Sundance Filmmaker’s Trophy. He is also a recipient of the distinguished MacArthur Fellowship. At UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, Else also served as the director of the documentary program.
“Jon Else’s award-winning film is a fascinating intersection of science, cinema and the enthralling legacy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” said Rob McCoy, chief executive officer, Atomic Museum. “As Oppenheimer’s story and the history associated with the Atomic Age continue to skyrocket in popularity, we look forward to this captivating discussion.”
The event will take place on Thursday, March 7 at The Beverly Theater located at 515 S. 6th Street, Las Vegas, NV 89101. Tickets are $38 per person and include one drink and hour d’oeuvres. Cocktail hour will begin at 6 p.m. and the conversation will begin at 7 p.m. Guests must be 21 or older to consume alcohol.

More than 120 employers are ready to meet face-to-face with thousands of job seekers striving for more in 2024 during Southern Nevada's largest annual Spring Job Fair on Friday, March 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall.
Job seekers can pre-register for the Spring Job Fair at https://tinyurl.com/SpringJobFair2024 or by clicking the image to the right to save time at the door, view participating employers, and receive important event updates. This year, job seekers can also upload their resume to the new registration site for employers to preview.
Clark County Commission Chairman Tick Segerblom and Commissioner Jim Gibson are once again hosting the popular free job fair in partnership with the EmployNV Business Hub. Historically, hundreds of attendees were hired on-the-spot, with hundreds of additional job offers extended pending background checks and other employment requirements.
“We know connecting employers to great hires helps keep our Southern Nevada economy strong,” said Clark County Commission Chairman Tick Segerblom. “The Spring Job Fair has a proven track record of helping businesses big and small find the workers they need while helping members of our community discover new opportunities.”
“The Spring Job Fair is a one-stop shop for anyone looking to re-enter the workforce or earn a better wage,” said Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson. “Attendees should treat this event like an interview with multiple employers because it is. Every employer is hiring.”
Based on last year's success, this year's Spring Job Fair will once again offer free childcare during the event for potty-trained children ages 3 to 6. Space is limited for this free resource, so advanced registration is highly recommended. The childcare registration link can also be found on the main Spring Job Fair registration page.
Job Seekers will also have access to a pop-up EmployNV Career Hub during the event, where they can access computers and printers. Career coaches will also be on hand for last-minute resume reviews, career exploration using virtual reality headsets, and to help job seekers learn about no-cost online courses to earn professional certifications for in-demand careers. Attendees are encouraged to bring multiple paper resumes to the event as there may be a wait for help at the pop-up.
Parking for the Spring Job Fair is free in adjacent lots. Job seekers should enter the job fair through the West Hall entrance toward the south side of the building.
Spring Job Fair attendees can email [email protected]v with questions.
